Oh hello.
I know it's been a few years, but let me tell you, I have so missed writing my blog posts! Between life being so ridiculously busy and being unsure of what direction life was headed, career-wise, I felt overwhelmed by the thought of trying to juggle it all at once. Well, life has a funny way of taking us through cycles, and I now find myself stepping back into design and turning back to a creative outlet. Drifting back to my career roots, if you will...
I felt like getting crafty the other day, and finally got around to using some of the
driftwood I had been collecting for years!
Fairly self explanatory, but I screwed on some hardware, tied and hot glue gunned the rope, and voila! Pretty happy with how it turned out.
Any crafty ideas you've come across lately? Just do it! You'll be happy that you did.
I know I am! Also happy to be back writing. Thanks for your patience, and I hope you enjoy! xo Jena

It has been far too long since I've posted, but today is not a fun update on what's been going on. I am at a loss for words. There was a terrible accident over the weekend. There is nothing I can say to make this situation even remotely bearable. A loss of a small life is beyond understanding. I don't know the answer why. And I probably never will. I do know God is now holding a sweet, sweet child in heaven. Our hearts are so completely broken for her family. I feel so honoured to have had the opportunity to know her, care for her and love her. She was not on this earth long enough, but she is so incredibly loved. Please keep this family in your prayers. If you could donate to the family, we have set up a YouCaring account to help this family out through this heart breaking time. The Story. Our dear friends, Kaz and Kayo lost their beautiful 15 month old daughter, Uta in a tragic accident. In her short time on this earth, she touched so many lives with love and joy; a legacy that will live on. Our hearts break for this family at the loss of such a precious life- a life that was so full of happiness and love, and gone too soon. While there are no words or actions we can do to make the situation even remotely bearable, we would like to help them financially, so they have one less stress in this terrible time. Our amazing community of Revelstoke has been incredibly supportive in this heart breaking situation already, with kind words, prayers, offers of help, and respect. Let's join together as friends and family, and show this incredible family our love. They have touched so many of our lives in many ways; let’s offer them all the support we can. Financially supporting them is one of the most practical ways we can help them right now. Funds raised will go toward funeral costs, living expenses, time away from their jobs, and future financial plans. Please let them be able to focus on the value of the funeral process, however they chose to proceed, but not the costs. This is something no parent can ever plan for; any help in this grieving process will be truly appreciated. With love, Friends of Kaz & Kayo. Please help support Kaz and Kayo.
Isn't the best way to teach children is by example?
By showing your children that we are all human, that it's okay to make mistakes, that it's okay to admit when we are wrong, you are teaching your children that not everyone is perfect, parents included.
Can a simple apology actually enrich your relationship with your child?
I would rather admit to a failure than fake a "perfect parenthood resume" and risking the lasting hurt of some unkind words directed at a child because I couldn't admit to them that I was wrong.
Is admission of failure going to prepare your children for the reality of life?
Yes, I think so. Everyone is going to let you down at some point. It doesn't mean a relationship has to end because of a mistake. It might actually make it deeper. Forgiving others for mistakes is as important as forgiving yourself, too.
Do you think apologizing to your children is important?
I'd love to hear what your thoughts are on this one... Happy Parenting! xo Jena
Has the flu hit your house yet? As a day care provider, I miraculously have not gotten sick, but my own kiddo has, and managed to power puke on me at least four times.
While I strive to keep my house very clean, after this week of sickness going around, I did a huge power clean. Kids toys go into the dishwasher basically every day, but when you have a huge batch of toys needing some serious cleaning, here is my tip of the day!
I used Tide Free and Gentle and some bleach, and we were good to go. We have a sanitary cycle on our LG washer, but I worried that would possibly melt the plastic toys, so just went with warm and figured the bleach would do its work.
I don't use bleach often at our house, but it has its place. Around my house, I most often use my favourite vinegar and soap mixture (I think regular Dawn soap works best!)
It's super easy: just a half soap, half vinegar mixture. It really works like a charm! Be sure the surfaces in your house don't react to vinegar. (Eg. Marble)
Do you have any tips for mass clean ups when it comes to toys? I am all ears!!
Happy Flu Season.... Xo Jena
As New Years has now happened, I've found myself thinking more and more about what's up. This year is actually a year I've been looking forward to for a really long time, as its my 30th year on this world. With that in mind, I've certainly been doing some reflecting.
Not to brush aside the fact that I haven't posted anything in nearly A YEAR, I feel like I've had to take some "me time" and actually do this reflecting. Thirty "New Years Resolutions" may seem like a lot, but they are more just reminders to myself to keep heading in the direction I was already going.

Stuff. Stuff. Stuff. If I don't love or need, it's gonna be gone. Soon. After I finish organizing my closets.
6. Laugh Often
I need to lighten up a bit sometimes. Bring on the comedy club, romantic comedies, and inviting our hilarious friends over for a dinner parties, with silly games. For the love of humanity! Like below, check out this photo of some art I got for my brother: how can you not have a huge grin on your face after seeing this one? I should have bought two or more!
7. Surround Myself with those who bring joy to my life
This is a bit of an easy one, since I love my family to bits. They bring me a lot of joy, they really do!
8. Do Nice Things for Others
While it's #8 on my list, it's in no way ordered by priorities. I love doing nice things for other people, especially when they don't know who did it. There are so many easy ways to be nice. Maybe it's be Canadian soul, but I truly love helping people. A really cool project I'm helping out with it the Revelstoke Pasta Feed. Free pasta. Come check it out!
9. Keep My Life in Order (even if it's slightly giving into my OCD tendancies)
Who would have thought a filing cabinet would bring such joy to my life?! It really did. In the moment I finished labeling and filing ALL of my paperwork, I felt like my life was just a little bit more on track. I'm growing up! Being now nearly 30, I guess I should be! It always seemed like the magical age to me when you really need to have you life in order. Well thank you, filing cabinet. I owe you one. Now if only someone could managed my receipts....
10. Read More Books
I'm thinking it'll look like this: something old, something new, something funny, and something to do with glue?
Wood Alphabet Sculpture "AZ" Bookend Color: Red from: Wayfair 11. Always Learn New Things
I feel like I'm always researching about things that I don't know about, from gardening to personality types to geography. I think once our brains stop learning, we might as well wave the white flag.
12. Go Somewhere I've Never Been
I'm open to suggestions on this one! Maui? Nicaragua? Thailand? Just remember, I turn 30 this year, so make your suggestions GOOD!!
13. Make Goals
I have always made goals since my dad first sat me down and asked me to write out my life goals. I lost the list but found it years later, with the amazing realization that I had completed most of the goals on the list. It was like it had subconsciously became part of my existence thanks to physically writing it down. I now make daily goal lists, aka "to do lists", sometimes completing them, sometimes not, but at least I can feel
Like I am doing something productive, and accomplishing my goals. 14. Surround Myself with Beauty
This is pretty easy to do when you live in a town as beautiful as where I live. To have access like this, literally in my backyard is unbelievable, really. So whether it's inside your house, or outside, I think I'll continue to surround myself with beautiful scenery. Easy enough!
15. Just Do It
All those things I've been procrastinating? Just get over myself and do it! It probably will take a while but if I think of something, I really should put it on a real, physical list. Why you ask? I really love crossing crap off my to do list.
16. Work Hard
I've always been a hard worker, there is no reason I shouldn't continue on with this trend. Last year was one of the hardest working years I've probably had to date, with the official launch of my new business, Cookie & Beans. It's busy, but good and rewarding. Always work hard! Always hard work!
18. Write a Book
I've actually started! On page 25 already. Buuuut that was about a year ago, and I've clearly come down with some serious writers block. So while it may be on the back burner, at least I've started, and started again on the blog. Yay.
19. Travel More
This kind of goes along with #12, but it's more of going anywhere more often. Key word would be frequency. Even if I've been there before and miss it. Those places are on this list.
20. Buy Experiences, not Things
We are hitting up Monster Trucks this weekend. Yup. That'll be an experience to remember. My son is SO excited! And that makes me excited. And to really step out of my comfort zone, I'm going to Megadeth this spring. A year of new experiences, but I rarely turn down and opportunity!
21. Make the effort to connect to other people
It may be weird to some people to know this, but I can sometimes be really shy. Most often, I'm not, but sometimes I get anxiety from talking to new people. So it can be a hard effort to connect, but I've always tried to get an E for effort on all my report cards so why change that now?
22. Enjoy my Job
This is not always the easiest thing, no matter what job I've had, but staying positive and reminding myself about WHY I'm in the field I'm in helps. Because I really do love my job, and I should really just enjoy every moment. Even on tough days, I am amazed to find out how much I really am still learning.

I'm thinking I want to learn a few new hobbies. Kind of strange ones I guess, like weaving and bread making.
24. Walk the Dog. Every day
25. Stay Positive
This can never be bad advice to myself. It's usually never as bad as it seems, and I just need to keep reminding myself that.

28. Dance More
My last dance party was incredibly fun even if I did get a stiletto to my bare foot and had to walk with a limp for a week. I would do it over again. So whether it's an hour long dance party with my niece in the kitchen or a Christmas party, I just wanna dance!
29. Be More Thankful
It's just a good thing, not just at Thanksgiving. Being thankful is so key to being happy. It's easy to get down when you forget all the awesome things/ people/ places in our lives. So just remembering to be thankful for all those awesome things/ people/ places would be an instant pick me up, right? So thank you!
30. Pray More
Well, when everything all falls apart, at least I can still pray because, as much as I'd love to think I'm all in control of my own life, I usually am not.
Which one(s) do you relate best to? Any thing that you would add to a list of 30 things for my 30th year? I guess I will be 31 someday... or maybe just 30 for the next 20 years!!
Happy New Years! xo Jena
The original recipe from Kids Activities Blog called for conditioner and corn starch, but I modified it and used the corn starch baby powder that I had lying around forever. It was very dusty to make, and I'd probably use a mask next time. Four hours later and I'm still coughing, thus the reason I never used it on my son! While the original recipe called for a 2:1 ratio of corn starch to conditioner, I used: 1 cup of conditioner 2- 1/4 cups of baby powder My first batch came out perfectly. On my second batch, I was a little short of a cup of extra conditioner, so I had to sacrifice some of my new conditioner to get the right consistency. On the bright side, maybe I will finally finish my shampoo and conditioner at the same time now! I have some pros and cons on this recipe, though.
At the end of the day, you can never have too much play dough, and you always have too much conditioner.
That works for me! But I would give it about a 2/5 in the end; it's a little too dense to play with all the contraptions and I would definitely not feel comfortable having a younger child playing with it, with the ingredients being very inedible. What is your favourite play dough recipe? My next play dough recipe I'm going to try is the famous Jello recipe at Modern Parents Messy Kids Happy Play Time! xo Jena Renovations are not always fun and easy. They usually are pretty stressful and somewhat terrifying, in case you were wondering. From experience, I've come up with a list of five ways to actually enjoy renovations. Or at least ways to renovate and avoid divorce...
2. Communicate AND Compromise Not everyone sees eye to eye during renovations. Be prepared for this. She wants the white feminine kitchen, he wants a dark masculine kitchen. Design styles differ, for sure. This is where it is great to have outside advice. Between communicating what you want and compromising with what they want, this is super important to a happy renovation. If you are absolutely set on a design or finish, be prepared to explain why. And be prepared to listen to their side. And together, figure out a compromise. You want white, he wants dark. Why not compromise and have dark on the bottom and white on top. Or a dark island (with a light counter) and white cabinets (with a dark counter) Contrast is a great design trick, and contrast goes hand in hand with compromise. Below is a great example! 3. Don't Tackle it ALL Between budget stresses and the lack of amenities, I recommend against biting off more than you can chew, especially if you are living in the house. If all your bathrooms suck, maybe try renovating just one at a time. Everyone needs a working toilet and shower. When we renovated our kitchen, we didn't have a sink or a dishwasher, but at least we still had a working tub! Don't make your house uninhabitable while renovating. Just don't.
5. Know That It Will Be Worth It Remembering that it will all be worth it in the end is hopefully enough for you to endure the renovation. Patience is a virtue, after all. Getting stressed out and worked up only makes things worse, so just breathe, have a coffee break and have fun! If you aren't that excited about the renovations, ask questions and try to learn something to make it a more positive experience. Remember to laugh and be encouraging to everyone involved in the renovation. If you are encouraging, rather than negative, it makes the whole project more enjoyable- for everyone. Contractors or spouses will always react more positively towards someone who isn't freaking out and being unreasonable. So there you have it! Those are my 5 recommendations on how to actually enjoy a renovation. Enjoy your renovations, and enjoy your Valentines! Because that's what it's all about: LOVE. Happy homes make happy families. xo Jena Please note, however, that I actually am one of those people that really enjoys renovating anyways,
Between stress management and diet, my colitis has been fairly under control, but I sometimes find it difficult to eat properly. A lot of really healthy things actually make my stomache hurt. Like raw broccoli or red onions. I've only just discovered this, and knowing this now, it would have saved me a world of hurt! This new "raw" food fad diet sounds great and everything, but please don't push it on me! It would probably kill me. Not literally at this point for myself, but for others, it could be a serious health setback if they were to try that diet. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying there is anything wrong with certain diets, but it is very important to know and to do what is best for your body.
After some serious tears over the onions, I started off cooking the garlic, shallots and onions over medium heat in the olive oil. One they were browned, I threw in the red pepper with the balsamic vinegar to sweeten the peppers. Then I threw in the carrots to get a little extra cooking time.
There you have it- my favourite soup recipe.
What's your favourite soup recipe? Which of the variations would you try or what are some other ideas? Feel free to add ideas in the comments. I always love hearing from you. Here's to a healthy soup! xo Jena
Honestly, this bathroom was pretty low on the priority list, but once it got finished, it was really nice to have two full bathrooms. After some fixing up, it had a working sink and toilet, so for the longest time, it was just our other half bath. When we bought the house, it came with a brand new shower that had never gotten installed, and with all the other renovations we had going on around the house, the shower sat in the box for a very long time.
Besides painting a small bathroom such a dark colour, the next craziest thing we did was salvage the hideous wall paneling that was in our basement. After a coat of primer and then painting it with Benjamin Moore Trim Paint in Calm, the fake wood panels turned into classic wainscoting. I also re-used the old baseboards to top of the wainscoting. This made for a cheap feature in the bathroom! So, when people tell you that you can't paint a small room in a dark colour, you can go right ahead and tell them, "I do what I want". I love my black, small bathroom, and because I went so bold with this bathroom,
it's actually become one of my favourite rooms in the house. Playing it safe with design can actually keep you from really expressing your true style, so I challenge you to break any design rule you like. I'd love to see your before and afters, and get your opinion on how it turned out for you. Do you love what you did? Happy Rule Breaking! xo Jena
After a ton of hard work, and two months of living without a kitchen, it is {mostly} DONE! I'm really happy with how it turned out. It was a lot of hard work, and it wasn't always fun living through a renovation, but it sure makes you appreciate the completed end result!
Life is so busy sometimes, and there will always be little jobs to do. I am still excited to get the little projects done, so it will feel really complete, but I feel lucky to have a kitchen (and a life) again! What do you think?
Happy Kitchen Appreciation Day! xo Jena |
