After a ton of hard work, and two months of living without a kitchen, it is {mostly} DONE! I'm really happy with how it turned out. It was a lot of hard work, and it wasn't always fun living through a renovation, but it sure makes you appreciate the completed end result!
Life is so busy sometimes, and there will always be little jobs to do. I am still excited to get the little projects done, so it will feel really complete, but I feel lucky to have a kitchen (and a life) again! What do you think?
Happy Kitchen Appreciation Day! xo Jena

We've wanted a wood fireplace since we got our house. We weren't planning on getting one right away, but after one winter of our heating bills, we figured it would be worth our while to get one, as it would basically pay for itself in one season of heat. Finally we found one that we liked- a modern wood insert. Of course, it was so new that it wasn't even made yet. That's how cutting edge we roll these days. We kept getting told it would be ready Novemeber, then not until December, then not until Spring 2014. Upon closer inspection, we realized that the one we were waiting for wouldn't even fit in our current fireplace! And that the smaller version of the same fireplace insert was available and has been for a while. Lame. Now, I'm not even sure where we are at on getting this, but we ended up buying this sweet infrared heater that has been lovely having, and I don't feel so rushed into getting the insert after all this confusion. Adam and I have yet to agree on the optional stainless steel surround or the plain black... What do you think? I'm pretty set on the stainless, while Adam is set on the black. Anyways, as I don't feel a rush anymore, I decided to switch up our current fireplace draft blocker. Unfortunately, we still needed the draft blocker, so it progressed from having this... I also was originally inspired by a fireplace I had seen on Houzz, where they had stacked a bunch of wood into the fireplace. If you can't burn it, at least pretend like you are ready to! I got really inspired by this door mat I saw in Canmore a few months back. As awesome as it looks, it seemed impractical as a door mat, but it would be awesome on our fireplace! Since we still needed to block the draft from our fireplace, my day dreams progressed into something a little more like this... So I grabbed the large sticks that were waiting to become a stair rail, and started chopping. I guess we need to find another stick for the handrail project now... Then came the fun part of screwing in every single piece of wood to the plywood. I don't know if you caught my sarcasm on that one, but that wasn't actually that fun. Of course, I ran out of wood before I could completely cover the plywood, but I figured since it's winter now and we have about a foot or two of snow already, it may be a while before I can find a branch. So bear with me as I unveil the mostly finished product! All in all, it added a really nice touch to the room, especially now that we've decorated for Christmas. I love this season! Jena xo
We found these lions costumes at Target, and we couldn't not get them. What a team these two are!
Next up, was doing something with the pumpkin seeds. I really like pumpkin seeds, so what better way to use the whole pumpkin? Waste not, want not. I soaked them in salt water for a few hours, and then drained it for about an hour. Looking back, I suppose I could have dried them with a towel, but hindsight is what they say it is. 20-20.
Then I burnt them. Oops. Next year.
Happy Halloweeeeeen! Jena xo
I also added a rock garden in the front, which left me with two smashed fingers, but a nicer curb appeal, even though we don't have any mulch yet. It's a work in progress. It always is... We built a new fire pit, just in time for fall, which I'm super excited about. More pictures on this one later! So, as much as I haven't written lately and feel like I haven't really accomplished much, in terms of our house, it's really feeling like home. Maybe it's that I appreciate it more, now that I'm not spending 24 hours a day in here.
I do love our little home, and more importantly, I love the people in our home! Progression on the house doesn't always happen at the rate I would necessarily like, but I know where my heart is. It's the people in my life that really make a house a home. Happy Days! Jena xo We looked at getting new windows installed as they are pretty ugly and old, but as our energy assessment told us, they actually are not bad when it comes to their energy efficiency. To upgrade them would change our house's energy efficiency so minimally that an immediate upgrade was immediately put on the back burner. Except for this window, the rest were in fairly good shape. Unfortunately, replacing even this window just wasn't in the budget. A little tape just to keep the wind and rain out seemed like a good option. Then I got the great idea. Out of sight, out of mind. And thus began yet another project.
I wanted something plain for the bathroom, but not too plain, so I opted for a faux Roman blind. I had picked out a linen that would have worked perfectly, but it was $19 per yard, so I decided I'd settle on the less expensive linen that would still be ok... thinking the less expensive, second choice linen was $12 when it was actually $21. Damn dyslexia. I took it home, and the colour just didn't work. I wished so badly I went for the other first choice of material, but no... I told my mom about the mistake, nearly in tears, and when my sister came to visit me last week, she had sent a flat sheet that she scored for $4. Of course, mom's ALWAYS know best, and the colour worked perfectly.
Next up was the second dowel. I covered the ends with purple duct tape (the colour choice is optional) and placed it in front of the shade. Tension is what is holding it in place, so that duct tape is not only hiding my beaver like cuts, but it is also providing grip and that extra 1/8" that the hand saw thought I didn't need.
Hope you appreciate it as much as I do!
Happy broken window hiding! Jena xo Something I don't admit to everyone (but am about to, via the www, no biggie) is that I have a hard time telling time. I don't know why, but it just confuses me. I have been practicing, as I have a few beautiful watches that I mainly wear for looks, but it's still a work in progress. Most embarrassing "can't tell time" moment? A friend of mine once asked what time it was, so I just stuck out my wrist for him to read it, and he points out to me that my watch it upside down. Yup. Clearly wearing that one for style and for style only! Clocks and watches are beautiful though, so here is a plethora of gorgeous time tellers, from vintage to modern to straight up rad! I had originally painted the accent wall another shade of grey. As if fifty shades wasn't enough already! Adam was starting to give me a hard time about my passion for grey, and I had to admit, it was too much. I had played it too safe. So, out came the ladder, rollers and paint, and our accent wall was transformed by Benjamin Moore's Galapagos Turquoise 2057-20. White accessories are a timeless thing, and thankfully, I happened to have some timeless accessories in my possession. When I look through magazines and they are showing off an up-cycling project, the majority of the time it calls for a quick spray paint with white for that "instant update", which we all know is never actually instant. Cleaning, sanding, priming, etc... Hardly instant, but hey, I'm just not one to sugar coat how it really is! Anyways, the nice thing about white accessories is that when you paint your wall turquoise or black or navy or yellow, your accessories might just match with your new wall. Winning! I got this letter H for my mother-in-law, but I just had to borrow it for a quick snap! Paired with the white planter and another quirky wooden accessory, it was a shot that just had to happen. Natural accessories are another thing that will never go out of style. How can they? It's what everything should be made of! (By the way, have you hugged a tree today?) Regardless of where you find your inspiration, don't be afraid to try something out of your comfort zone. It just might be the best thing you could do for your house. And if not, you could always change it back. Of course, a relatively small accent wall is a great way to try something a little crazy. Maybe painting your entire house emerald green would be a little much, and a little harder to fix. Try a throw pillow if you aren't ready to dedicate yourself! Happy Decorating! Jena xo
Another round of High and Low, this time with a gold theme. I've started appreciating gold in home decor lately, but it hasn't always been that way. I used to really dislike gold, unless I was competing for something. Who doesn't want to win gold? And so, a tribute to the colour that I've finally come around to. High

Oh, coffee. How I love thee! I know I'm not the only one in the world who has a slight addiction to the stuff, but I just can't get enough of it! I enjoy it so much, I even have integrated it into my coffee table decor! We love it, but it seems like we drink a lot more coffee because of it. Just the smell makes you want it! Yesterday, I didn't have any coffee. It was so hot out, so I figured if I am doing everything in my ability to stay cool, drinking coffee isn't going to help me out. But two o'clock rolled around, and I remembered why I love coffee so much. No migraines! Maybe it was more of a coffee withdrawal headache than a migraine but still... At about 2:10 in the afternoon, I was sipping on my morning coffee. So, correction. Yesterday, I didn't have any coffee until 2:10. And at 2:40, another cup of coffee. Jena xo Ever thought of how many grocery bags are wasted every time you go shopping? I try so hard to remember to bring one or two of the reusable bags, but I always seem to forget about them until I am at the check out. It's an issue I am truly working on, and there is hope! I am getting better at remembering. Regardless of my attempts, I have one billion grocery bags. Yes, one billion. I counted last night.... ....Into this! Outside needed some pillows and voila! I doubt I need to give instructions on this one, but I will anyways in five simple steps. 1. Cut a square piece of material slightly larger than a grocery bag (Use a durable feeling material for outside) 2. Sew three and a half of the sides inside out. 3. Turn the material back to good side out. 4. Stuff with garbage bags as shown in first picture. 5. Sew shut. Done and done. Thanks for reading!
